Webb, Richard [d.1827]. A Short Account of the Dying Behaviour of Richard Webb, Who was Executed at Oxford, For Horse-Stealing, On Monday, March 26, 1827. Oxford: Baxter, Printer, [1827]. 10-1/4" x 7-1/2" broadside mounted to 10-3/4" x 8-1/4" backing sheet, text in two columns below headline. Moderate toning, two small stains to right edge, faint fold lines to broadside. $1,500. * Webb, a long-time servant of the Pearman family, had been placed in the stocks and whipped after stealing from the family. After nursing a grudge for two decades, he decided to get his revenge: he set the stable on fire and stole two horses. The judge did not even need to consider the arson and second theft charge in order to convict him, and Webb was executed for one of the horse thefts. This broadside is rare and appears to be unrecorded. No copies located on OCLC, Library Hub or the online catalogue of the University of Oxford (SOLO). (Inventory #: 81725)
