[N.p., 1880. Very good.. Two albumen photographs. Sight size of each: 7.5 x 5.5 inches. Each matted and elaborately displayed in ornate decorative frames, each 16 x 14 inches total. Minor wear and some chipping to frames. A striking pair of substantially-sized albumen studio portraits featuring a well-to-do African-American couple in the late-19th century. The man is shown in a long coat buttoned at the the very top, with his right hand atop a pile of books stacked on a stone pedestal. The woman, presumably his wife, is featured in a fine dress, holding an umbrella in her right hand, and with her left hand posed behind her back. We partially opened the backing on the woman's photograph and did not spy any annotations or studio markings on the verso. The photographs make for a wonderful display for collectors of African-American history and/or photographica, retaining the wonderful original materiality of the frames. (Inventory #: 5311)
