Rare 18th century botanical print of a comfrey plant. It has medicinal properties including anti-inflammatory and astringent uses. This image first appeared in Leonhart Fuch's "De Historia Stirpium", published in Basel in 1542, one of the earliest and most celebrated works of botanical illustrations. This print was issued in "Anleitung zu der Pflantzenkenntniss", Salomon Schinz's first and only re-issue of Fuch's work, from which he printed 101 of 512 plates using the original wood blocks, borrowed from Chorherr Gessner and colored between 1774-1777. In very good condition, with minor wear and repairs to edges, otherwise paper is clean and bright. (Inventory #: 325514)
