The British engineer William Ellis Metford (1824-1899) is best known for designing the Metford rifling used in the .303 calibre Lee-Metford and Martini-Metford service rifles in the late 19th century. Largely written by Fremantle, who was mentored by Metford, this memoir appears in an abbreviated form in Volume CXL of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Accompanied by a presentation slip: "To Rev. S.A.T. Yates From H.M. Brunel." The bookplate of noted book collector Samuel Ashton Thompson-Yates appears on the front pastedown. Octavo: [19] pp. with a frontispiece portrait. All edges gilt. In a one-half green morocco over marbled paper binding by Co-Operative Bookbinders, London, with gilt-stamped titles, gilt- and blind-stamped borders and decorations, two raised bands, and matching marbled endpapers.
