Warmly Inscribed by the author to American novelist Mary McCarthy and her husband Jim West: "Dear May and Jim - Another friend described this (publicly) as a hard book to put down, and an even harder one to pick up. Nevertheless - with love, Tom May, 1988." Laid in, as it came to us, is a chatty note to McCarthy from an otherwise unidentified "Susan", apparently a Maine neighbor of McCarthy's.
