1872 · Utica, New York
Utica, New York, 1872. Very good. A little toning, letter folds, a couple minor short tears.. Ephemera charting the higher education of Harriet Sophia Parker (née Rowley, 1853-1943). The family valued higher education for both their male and female children. Harriet's brother, Hiram C. Rowley, would marry Thirza Jane Merriam (1845-1919), and join her family's printing business, Merriam-Webster. Includes two items: a lithographed grade report for the Apring 1872 term at Harriet's school, the Utica Free Academy, and also a signed certificate of academic scholarship from the same institution dated 1869. Each is finished in manuscript. Interesting to see the family's support of this teenaged girl's education, and also interesting to see what subjects she was taught: French, Mental Philosophy, Chemistry, Etymology, Composition, and Penmanship. Certificate measures approx. 10" by 8", and grade report is bifolium measuring approx. 8.5" by 5.5
