CORDELL HULL (1871-1955). Hull was the longest-serving Secretary of State.TLS. 2pgs. June 5, 1939. Washington. A typed letter signed Cordell Hull as Secretary of State. On his official letterhead, Hull wrote to Frances Perkins, the Secretary of Labor and the first woman Cabinet member: The President has requested me to arrange for transportation from Mount Vernon to Washington, including the visits to the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp at Fort Hunt, and Arlington Cemetery, following a luncheon on board the U.S.S. Potomac and ceremonies in Mount Vernon on June 9th. From the enclosed list you will note provisions have been made for you to drive in car #13 with the Secretary of Commerce, the Honorable George T Summerlin, Chief of Protocol and Captain Curzon-Howe, Naval Attach to the British embassy. Unless otherwise advised I shall assume you will drive in your own car to the Navy Yard where you should plan to arrive by 11:30 o'clock. The red sticker and clothes should be placed on the windshield of your car to enable you to pass through the police lines. A mimeographed listing of the vehicular procession, including President Roosevelt and King George VI in car #1, is included. The letter has light mailing folds and is in fine condition.
