A handwritten, unsigned letter detailing battles between the French and Austrians in late March 1799, during the Napoleonic Wars: brings accounts of very bloody battles that have been fought in Swabia & Italy, & which have been as many brilliant victories over the French on 25th of March The French attacked the Austrians in the environs of Tullingen but were completely defeated so obliged to retreat. On 22nd & 23rd The French attacked Feldkirch but were driven back with great loss. They say 4,000 were killed & wounded. The Battle of the 25th began by the French attacking Genl Neerfelt, whom they drove with great loss, but the Arch Duke Charles to his assistance, & after a a [sic] long conflict in which the Austrians lost a great many men, but, the French considerably more, the latter were driven in all points, & letters from Stockach of the 27th say that this action was more decisive than was at first believedThe Archduke on Fact led on the Austrians, & by his own personal Bravery greatly contributed to the success of the Day. It was reported at Frankfort on the 30th that the Austrians had since gained another great Victory [possibly some words missing]. The letter is in fair condition with a large piece missing from the upper margin. (Inventory #: 6340)
