first edition
1965 · New York
by Capote, Truman
New York: Random House, Inc, 1965. Uncorrected Proof. Uncorrected proof, described by the publisher as "Advance Proofs (Uncorrected)," the earliest separate printed state of bestselling true crime work, preceding the much more common 500-copy run of the jacketed Advance Reading Copy. Tall quarto, plastic comb-bound wraps, label mounted on front wrap. Contents printed on rectos only. Very Good+, small coffee stain to front wrap, smaller stain to rear wrap, bottom corner of textblock bumped, some bracketing and a few marginal notes in an unknown hand mostly in pencil, very few in pen. In quite nice shape for such a fragile item with all the teeth of the comb-binding intact and the wraps holding well. A scarce advance format of the Pulitzer Prize and Edgar Award-winning book. Within two years it had inspired a film adaptation. Copies like this one were given to a few book reviewers before the January 17, 1966 official publication of the first edition, representing the distillation of over 8,000 pages of notes by Capote. Indeed, the book has achieved such stature in popular culture that the writing of it inspired two films: Infamous and the better-known Capote. APG Capote 011a.
