Knapp was a prolific writer in San Francisco at the turn of the century, a member of the circle of writers that included Joaquin Miller and Ina Coolbrith. She wrote columns for the San Francisco Call and was a social activist and environmentalist. She was also anti-Chinese and anti-Suffrage.
She was Charlotte Perkins Gilman's lover and lived with her for two years until a falling-out in 1893.
