Glendale: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1974. First Edition. 339pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Blue cloth with title and rules gilt stamped on backstrip. Top edge blue. Fold-out map present at the front. Near fine. Frontier Military Series IX (9). Volume 9 in the 'Frontier Military Series.' This work is the first time that Thompson's account of the Custer tragedy has been given a detailed critical analysis. Thompson survived the Battle of Little Big Horn on Reno Hill, and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor as a water carrier. His personal account of the battle, however, is unreliable and, at times, wholly fictitious. Daniel Magnussen's careful editorial commentary, greater in length than the 'Narrative,' is a most illuminating treatment of the Custer Battle and a first-class example of historical analysis. Clark & Brunet 278.
