first edition Wraps
1975 · Los Angeles
by Cesaretti, Gusmano
Los Angeles: Acrobat Books, 1975. First Edition. Wraps. Good. The first book to explore the Chicano graffiti and street culture of East Los Angeles. Developed independently of New York graffiti, the so-called Cholo style employed calligraphic elements from Gothic writing, typically in the form of monochrome names or gang affiliations, often associated with a street number. The images in this monograph were captured by Italian-born photographer Gusmano Cesaretti, who was guided through the streets by Charles "Chaz" Bojórquez, now recognized as the godfather of L.A. graffiti. Square octavo: unpaginated with black-and-white photographs throughout. A cheaply-produced book, often encountered with binding issues. This example is better than most, with some minor internal splitting towards the rear. Small ink price stamp to the half-title. The original pictorial paper wrappers are a little edgeworn, with a bit of toning along the spine. (Inventory #: 77858)
