Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in volume 1. Moderate rubbing to the extremities and light cracking to the spines. Two of the volumes with chips to the leather at the head of the spine. Spine label of label of volume 5 missing. 2" cosmetic crack to rear joint of volume 6. Stitching periodically visible in the inside margins. Occasional light foxing to the pages. Contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper of volume 1. Light dampstaining to the top halves of the terminal leaves of volume 1. Page designations periodically misnumbered, effaced, or with typographical flaws, however all pages are present, and in the correct order. With 23 plates, including 5 folding plates, and 2 folding maps. The third plate in volume 5 is facing p. 174 instead of p. 175. The second plate in Volume 8 is facing p. 176 rather than p. 219. A work by the French academic and author Carolus Rollin (1661-1741). This is his most famous work.
