first edition
1925
by Christie, Agatha
1925. London: John Lane The Bodley Head, (1925). 2 pp undated ads. Original light blue cloth decorated in black.
First Edition of Agatha Christie's sixth book -- the last to be published by John Lane / The Bodley Head. Christie's five previous works are listed on the half-title verso, and also make up the ad leaf at the rear; her next effort (in 1926) would be her breakout one, the ingenious THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD -- the first to be published by Collins. It was during these years (1925-1926), that Agatha was in dire financial straits, as her marriage to Archie Christie was breaking up (golf being a major culprit). In 1929, her tenth book, THE SEVEN DIALS MYSTERY, would be a sequel to THE SECRET OF CHIMNEYS. In this "light-hearted thriller" (per Agatha herself), drifter Anthony Cade gets into more than he bargained for: his job escorting "seven depressed-looking females and three perspiring males" on an African safari morphs into international intrigue involving the country of Herzoslovakia, culminating with a murder at the rambling Berkshire estate "Chimneys." This copy is in near-fine condition (occasional light foxing mainly on the edges, but much less soil or wear than is typical for this light-colored binding). Sanders & Lovallo 6. (Inventory #: 15657)
