Seattle: Fantagraphics Books, 2017. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Three-part retrospective of the controversial art of S. Clay Wilson (1941-2021), the taboo-breaking underground cartoonist who first achieved notoriety as a contributor to Zap Comix in the late 1960s. In contrast to the many counterculture figures who moderated their more extreme tendencies and successfully assimilated into the mainstream of commercial culture, Wilson's work remained troubling to mainstream sensibilities and defiantly ill-mannered. This collection includes Wilson's work from Zap #12-15, his collaborations with William S. Burroughs, never-before-published privately commissioned watercolors and paintings, and much more. Quarto, three volumes: various paginations with artwork throughout (some color). Original pictorial boards. Some mild bumping to the corners and tips, with a bit of shelfwear to the dust jackets; otherwise a very good set. (Inventory #: 77846)
