[Pasadena, California]: [Godfrey Rueger], 1949. Born in Switzerland, John Rueger (1817-1901) apprenticed as a cooper before emigrating to the United States in 1834 and settling in Detroit. Following the news of the gold discovery in California and a harrowing overland journey, he arrived in the Sacramento Valley, establishing a brewery in Marysville, which moved to the California House in Benicia in 1855. This account was published in the Benicia Herald on June 1, 1923, and in the El Segundo Herald on February 8, 1824, and subsequently in booklet form by Rueger's grandson, Godfrey. 12mo: 15 p. Bound with staples in the original printed blue paper wrappers. Light toning to the extremities; else near fine.
