by BAEDEKER, Karl
Leipzig: Karl Baedeker, 1914. First Edition. First printing. 12mo (16cm); original red, flexible oilskin boards, marbled page edges; lxiv,590pp; 40 maps, 78 Plans (many folding, most printed in colors). Collated and complete. A nearly pristine copy, exhibiting practically no discernible external aging or wear; internally complete and very fresh save a small loss to bottom fore-corner of pp.li/lii, costing a few characters of text but no loss of sense. There is is a closed (mended) marginal tear, about 2cm, to the large folding General Map of Russia. Lacking the very rare dustwrapper.
First (only) edition of one of the best and scarcest Baedekers, capturing Imperial Russia and areas of Czarist influence on the eve of the Great War and the 1917 Revolution. In a few short years many of the regions and landmarks in this guide would either be gone or transformed forever. Like all Baedekers of the period, the text, printed on nearly translucent India paper, is fragile. The current example is beautifully preserved, save for one small loss at a page-corner. All of the maps and plans, including the large folding map of Russia and city plans of Moscow and St. Petersburg (among many, many others), are present and in fine condition. (Inventory #: 83640)
