1960s Anti-War Protest Press Photo Archive

[Radical Activism] [1960s] Press photograph archive of anti-war demonstrations from the 1960s, including the infamous 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention (DNC) protests. 1968-1969. Archive of three black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring 10" x 8". Each photograph portrays the widespread upheaval among youth in response to the Vietnam War at different points on the late 1960s. Each photograph captioned on the left-hand side. Two photographs depict key moments of the 1968 Chicago DNC protests, an era-defining political confrontation between agitated youth from across the nation and members of the political establishment concerning American (truncated) policy in Vietnam. Confrontations came during a time of both national disagreement over the future of Vietnam peace talks and local recuperation from the devastating riots following the assassination of MLK Jr. This made protesters fiercely determined to disrupt the convention and then Chicago Mayor Richard J. Bradley keen on suppressing them by any and all measures. One photograph depicts young protesters moving into Grant Park as they planned to move onwards to the DNC. Shortly after this photograph was taken Chicago police entered the park armed with batons and brutalized the protesters in one of the most infamous events of the convention weekend. Another photograph depicts a barricade in Grant Park being erected by the Youth International Party, also known as the Yippies, among the most provocative and confrontational groups involved. As the National Guard poured into Chicago and brutally attacked protesters, Yippie leaders Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, with others from SDS and the Black Panther Party, became embroiled in a highly publicized courtroom battle known as the "Trial of the Chicago 8" as a result of the ensuing events. The third photograph depicts a massive demonstration in San Francisco around a year later at the San Francisco Army Presidio, what was then an army post located in the city. Around 10,000 youth had attended to protest the trial of the "Presidio 27", AWOL soldiers who had turned against the war and protested inside their detainment facility. The event and its response represented a cornerstone moment for internal dissent against the war. Archive in overall very good condition.
