Painted Portrait of A.G. Spalding in a Boston Uniform

Unbound. Near Fine. Oil[?] painting on canvas. 5.5" x 11.5". Unsigned. Undated [circa 1930?]. Framed in a simple wood frame. Light soiling on the image, near fine. Probably later note on verso: "A.G. Spalding based upon the circa 1874 Warren cabinet photo. MHG". Spalding pictured wearing a Boston Red Stockings uniform, set against a neutral background, with his left hand on his hip and his hand holding his cap near fine knee. Spalding joined the team in 1871 and left after 1975 to join the Chicago White Stockings where he was the player-manager. The style of the painting is amateurishly-competent, but little betrays the actual date of the painting beyond it obviously having some considerable age. (Inventory #: 597151)
