first edition Hardcover
(c.1949) · New York
by Bowles, Paul
New York: New Directions. Very Good. (c.1949). First American Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket, but encased in a nice-looking facsimile reproduction of the original first edition jacket; see 2nd scanned image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy, spine very slightly turned, light soiling to covers, a tiny bit of fraying to cloth at base of spine, previous owner's scrawled initials on front endpaper]. Bowles's highly-regarded tale of alienation and existential despair, set in North Africa and the Sahara. A book that's definitely not to everyone's taste -- and if you don't like the book, you're REALLY going to want to avoid the 1990 film adaptation directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, a lushly-photographed package of pure cinematic ennui. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, which has not been factored in to our pricing. .
