[Latino, Chicano, Mexico][Art] Foster, George M. Contemporary Pottery Techniques in Southern and Central Mexico. New Orleans: Middle American Research Institute Tulane University, 1955. Original green wrappers. 48 pages with fold-out map. George M. Foster's ethnographic study of pottery in South and Central Mexico, originally printed in Publication 22, explores ceramic techniques both native to Mexico and introduced to the region by the Spanish. The text is broken up into three parts, with the first providing an overview of techniques commonly used in Mexican pottery including hand modeling, coiling, molding, wheeling throwing, finishing, and firing. The second part provides a detailed breakdown of pottery making centers by state with a focus on Mexico, Morelos, Michoacan, Jalisco, Colima, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Part three offers Foster's conclusions followed by a bibliography, index, and over 50 photographs and sketches of pottery practices. Spine sunned and edges of wrappers sunned with sticker removal mark in top left corner. Ex-libris stamps of Southern Methodist University Library and of noted anthropologist Julian H. Steward. Overall good condition. An exploration of pre- and post-Columbian pottery techniques from an ethnographic and anthropological viewpoint.
