signed 8vo
1958 · London
by Greene, Graham
London: Heinemann, 1958. 8vo. Publisher’s blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt. In unclipped dust jacket (15s), rear jacket panel toned, a few short tears and other edgewear, some soiling, mild scattered foxing. 8vo. One of Greene's most well-known works, meaningfully (and humorously) inscribed to his secretary on the front free endpaper: "For D.R.Y. / from Graham Greene / in sadness that this is your last / headache."
"D.R.Y.," are the initials of Doris Young, who served as Greene's secretary from the early 1950s until her departure in 1958. She came to Greene from politician Henry Walston, whose wife, Catherine Crompton, was Greene's mistress. Young served as Greene's amanuensis throughout the 1950s, typing up letters and several novels, including The End of the Affair (inspired by Catherine and dedicated to her) and The Quiet American. Wobbe A38a; Book label of William A. Strutz (1934-2024) to front pastedown (Inventory #: 369778)
