by DUMAS, Alexandre
London: Chapman and Hall, 1846. Full Description:
DUMAS, Alexandre. The Count of Monte-Cristo. With Twenty Illustrations Drawn on Wood by M. Valentin, and Executed by the Most Eminent English Engravers Under the Superintendence of Mr. Charles Heath. In Two Volumes. Vol. I. [II.] London: Chapman and Hall, 1846.
First edition in English (the first French edition was published in 1844-45). Two octavo volumes (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; 220 x 140 mm. iv, 464; iv, 464 pp. Twenty inserted plates including the frontispieces by M. Valentin (designed for the English edition).
Original rose-brown cloth, professionally and almost invisibly rebacked, preserving almost all of the original spines (no loss of gilt stamping). Boards blocked in blind and with gilt-stamped rose window designs as central devices. Spines lettered and decoratively blocked in gilt. Edges uncut. Newer endpapers of appropriate coated yellow stock. Corners a bit bumped, and edges slightly rubbed. Some light soiling and toning, mainly to preliminaries. Text generally very clean and bright. Plates with foxing, but mostly marginal, frontispieces a little heavier. Overall a very good-looking set of a highly sought-after title, extremely rare in original cloth.
The Count of Monte-Cristo first appeared in English as an illustrated serial in the London Journal earlier this same year. “No translator’s name is given, yet it is interesting to note that almost every successive English edition has been based upon his work” (Reed).
F.W. Reed, quoting Maurice Baring, calls The Count of Monte Cristo "The most popular book in the world." The novel first appeared serially in the Parisian newspaper Le Journal des debats, from 28 August 1844 to 15 January 1846, and in fact met with tremendous success from the very first.
Reed, pp. 175-176.
