1670 · Vesaliae Clivorum
by Publius (or Flavius) Vegetius Renatus
Vesaliae Clivorum: ex officina Andreae ab Hoogenhuysen, 1670. Hardcover. Very good. Splendid illustrated edition of the 5th century treatise on Roman warfare and military principles. De re militari was hugely influential during the Middle Ages as a handbook of chivalry, with its emphasis on training, rewards of merit, and other concepts that transcended class. Even after the introduction of gunpowder to Europe, it was carried by generals and their staffs as a field guide to methods.
Three volumes in one: bound with Godeschalcus Steewech's Commentarius and Petrus Scriverius' Correctionum Militarium Liber. Thick 12mo: [48], 510, [16], 604, [50], 78 p. with added engraved title pages, a folding plate, and numerous textual engravings after the Flemish painter Paulus van Somer (collated complete). In full contemporary parchment, with yapp edges and holographic spine titles. Tiny hole mid leaf 2F8 affecting illustration and very brief text. Early 20th century armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Mild soiling to the parchment, with a bit of light bumping to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. (Inventory #: 77781)
