by [Broadside Poster]
Very Good. 49 x 69 cm. Modest soiling and one small closed gouge (no loss of text). Miniscule union label on front indicating, we think, that this was printed by union labor in Oneida County, NY. We assume that this was issued by the owner's of Sylvan Beach or some collection of local businesses. Online information indicates that these "Colored Picnic" days were a once a year occurance and were ended once Sylvan Beach was integrated. This poster is undated but is likely to date from the 1930s or so. Phil's recollection from research done when this was purchased a few years ago was that whites were permitted to go to Sylvan Beach on Colored Picnic days but that African Americans were only permitted at Sylvan Beach on Colored Picnic days. Sylvan Beach seems to still be in operation with rides that look like the traditional ones that Sharon and I remember from the mid-20th century. (Inventory #: 95218)
