New York: Mine Shaft Club, 1978. 8.5 x 11 inch handbill, with some crinkling to bottom left corner, faint creases across the middle and lengthwise, and previous owner's penned notation of "1978" in top margin. Also thrown in is a worn and stained example of the Mine Shaft newsletter from February 1978. Advertising a body painting contest with door proceeds going to club member Abel Rocca to help with his hospital costs for a hip injury, and a first place prize of $50. The Mine Shaft was an iconic gay club in New York City, with attendees such as Freddy Mercury, Rock Hudson, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The club's leather and BDSM scene also featured as inspiration for the 1980 film "Cruising.
