(Goleta or Santja Barbara): n.p., 1878. Hardcover. Good. 30 oblong folios, with 28 original watercolors of California wildflowers, one half folio oa partial wildflower and two sketches, and one blank leaf. Bound in half leather by Edward Devey of San Francisco in 1877 (stamp on front pastedown). The binding is well worn but the contents are in very good condition.
The monogram of the unknown artist appears in two painting: APB. Most images have the botanical name of the flowers, and many have the location as Bartlett Canyon, which is near Goleta, California. Folio 12 has the date 6/23/1878 and the note, "Hill above vineyard".
Depicted are such wildflowees as Palmarella, Yerbe mansa, Ceanothus thrysiflorius var, spinosus, and Fritilaria lancolata. A complete list of the 28 named species is laid in.
