Finely bound by Birdsall in half brown morocco, brown linen cloth sides. Spines in 5 compartments with raised bands. Gilt. The compartment contains a gilt vignette of Caliburn held aloft by the Lady of the Lake. The original cloth covers are bound into volume 1. They have curled a bit on the mounting paper. Only a faint trace of wear but a fine set.
This is the two volume edition of the Flint's Mortre d'Arthur originally published in four volumes, vellum, in 1911. It was later printed in a one volume edition.
Birdsall & Son, Northampton, was one of the main bookbinding firms in Great Britain from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. In 1792 William Birdsall ([c. 1750]-1826) bought the bookselling and bookbinding business of John Lacy & Son in Northampton. It closed in 1961. The National Library of Wales holds its archives.
