Fargo, D.T. [Dakota Territory]: F. Jay Haynes, 1884. [1000 Series]. Photograph. Very Good. Stereoview photograph on a tan Yellowstone National Park mount [10 cm x 18 cm]. Yellowstone National Park backstamp. Title is shown in a black title strip along the bottom edge of the right image. The front side of the mount is abraided along the top and bottom edges (this does not affect the images). A short contemporary notation is written in black ink on the reverse. A nice view of the successively ascending south terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railway and, later, for Yellowstone National Park. Haynes travelled to Yellowstone in 1882 and captured many images of the emerging park. He opened his Log Cabin Studio the following year at Mammoth Hot Springs and continued to photograph the park for many years to come. Haynes' photography is inextricably linked to the public image of the famous national park. (Inventory #: 67580)
