Fargo, D.T. [Dakota Territory]: F. Jay Haynes, 1884. [1000 Series]. Photograph. Very Good. Stereoview photograph on a tan Yellowstone National Park mount [10 cm x 18 cm]. Yellowstone National Park backstamp. Title is shown in a black title strip along the bottom edge of the right image. Lightly bumped at the top right corner, minor smudging to the mount. A beautiful straight-on look at the misty Great Falls, framed excellently and with nice focus and contrast.
Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railway and, later, for Yellowstone National Park. Haynes travelled to Yellowstone in 1882 and captured many images of the emerging park. He opened his Log Cabin Studio the following year at Mammoth Hot Springs and continued to photograph the park for many years to come. Haynes' photography is inextricably linked to the public image of the famous national park. (Inventory #: 67584)
