[Chicano, Mexico] [Literature] Acosta Zeta, Oscar. The Revolt of the Cockroach People. San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books, 1973. First edition. First printing. 258 pages. Hardcover book in original cloth binding with publisher's dust jacket. Famed Chicano lawyer and activist Oscar Z. Acosta's semi-autobiographical novel, written in the style of Gonzo journalism, exploring the racial tensions and upheavals in East Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s. The novel follows a Chicano lawyer named "Buffalo Zeta Brown" in the midst of fictionalized version of major events in the Chicano Movement such as the famous high school walkouts and the death of Ruben Salazar (fictionalized as "Roland Zanzibar"). Acosta himself had been a prominent figure in the East LA Chicano Movement, defending members of high schools walkouts, the Brown Berets, and activist-boxer Rodolfo Gonzales. Hunter S. Thompson immortalized Acosta as "the Samoan" in his famed book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Illustrations are present throughout the book. Light wear to dust jacket. Overall very good condition. The novel provides a compelling exploration of Chicano struggle in Los Angeles and the rise of Chicano nationalism.
