by Liebow, Averill; Warren, Shields; De Coursey, Elbert
Ann Arbor: American Journal of Pathology, 1949. First edition. Near fine.. Rare presentation copy of this scarce report by the Joint Commission for the Investigation of the Atomic Bomb in Japan, inscribed by lead author and Yale pathologist Averill Liebow to a future graduate of Yale School of Medicine. Liebow, a leading pulmonary pathologist and Yale professor, was recruited to join the Joint Commission under Colonel and fellow Yale faculty member Ashley Oughterson, MD, directly after the end of World War II, and kept a diary of his observations and experiences later published as ENCOUNTER WITH DISASTER: A Medical Diary of Hiroshima. The initial 1,300-page report of the Joint Commission was drafted by Liebow and Warren in 1946 and presented to the US Surgeon General before presentation and publication in this summary form; Liebow and Oughterson's recommendations for continued study of the bomb's medical effects led to Truman's establishment of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. The recipient of Liebow's inscription received his own MD from Yale in 1955 and served in both the Army and the Navy before his eventual appointment as associate clinical professor at UC Davis. A scarce book, rare inscribed. 9.5'' x 6.5''. Contemporary green buckram with gilt-lettered spine. Green cardstock title page. 143 numbered photographic illustrations following text. Reprinted from The American Journal of Pathology 1949, Vol. XXV, No. 5, pages 853-1027. Inscribed on title page: "Inscribed, with pleasure, for Russell Miller. Averill Liebow, June, 195[4]."
