CRUIKSHANK, George, engraver. [MARRYAT, Frederick, illustrator]. The Progress of a Midshipman exemplified in the career of Master Blockhead in seven plates & Frontispiece. London: Thos. McLean, Aug 1st 1835.
First edition, [third state of the plates]. Oblong quarto (10 5/8 x 16 3/4 inches; 270 x 426 mm.). Eight hand-colored aquatint plates, including the hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, engraved by G. Cruikshank after Captain Frederick Marryat. All plates mounted on stubs. Plate no. 8 has alight water-stain on the lower margin (7/8 x 6 inches; 23 x 152 mm.) not affecting plate mark. Plate nos. 4, 5, 6 & 7 have the same water-stain but so light, they are almost invisible.
Recent half black straight-grain morocco over marbled boards, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments.
According to OCLC and KVK there is only one copy of the first state with the plates dated 1820. (Harvard University, Houghton Library, MA, USA): Just one copy of the second state with the plates dated 1821. (Huntington Library, CA, USA) and just one copy of the third state with the plates dated 1835. (Harvard University, Houghton Library, MA, USA)
Note: Interestingly enough plate numbers 2, 4, 5 & 6 show a feint "Pubd. by G. Humphrey 27 St. James's St. London 1820" just above the McLean imprints.

3. Mr. B. on the Middle Watch. (Plate 3, August 1st, 1835). Hand-colored aquatint.
4. Mr. B. Mastheaded - or, enjoying the fresh air for the 304th time. (Plate 4, August 1st, 1835).
5. Mr. B. seeking the Bubble reputation. (Plate 5, August 1st, 1835).
6. *Waiting room at the Admiralty - (*no misnomer). (Plate 6, August 1st, 1835).
7. Mr. B. Promoted to Lieut: & first putting on his uniform. (Plate 7, August 1st, 1835).
