Octavo (17.5cm); light blue-grey cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; [2],[iv],v-viii,9-234,[4]pp. Spine ends gently nudged, a few tiny stains to right edge of front endpaper, some barely-discernable soil to rear panel, with some old, faint staining to upper corners of rear endpaper; Very Good+. In the original pictorial dustjacket, spine-sunned, shelfworn, chipped, and torn, with some scattered stains and some old, faint soil to rear panel; Good. The first serious study of Wilde as a writer, originally published in 1912 in an edition of 1500 copies (1100 for Martin Secker in the U.K., 400 by Mitchell Kennerly in the U.S.). The publication was the subject of a libel action, issued in a second edition the following year with some offending passages omitted, and the text expanded by some 20pp. Surviving dustjackets are uncommon.
