This edition follows the French edition published earlier in 1984, but actually predates the first published Czech edition, which was published in Toronto in 1985. A film adaptation directed by David Kaufman and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche was released in 1988. The film was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography, and ranked eighty-seventh on the AFI list of the hundred best love stories in American cinema.
