First edition of this eight volume set published from 1863 to 1887 by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London. Complete set in burgundy/red cloth covered boards with gold lettering on the spines. All volumes in Good to Good plus condition and collated to include all maps, plans, plates, and advertisements as listed in each volume. All text blocks are well sewn but several volumes have issues with the hinges as noted: volume 2 has the front hinge starting and the back hinge almost completely broken through; volume 4 has the front hinge just starting; volume 5 has the front and rear hinge starting and the spine is sunned; and, volume 6 has the front hinge just starting. Hinges on volumes 1,3,7, and 8 are intact. The exterior shows some color loss and rubbing on most volumes; corners on a few volumes are slightly bumped. Fore edges are lightly soiled. Pages are a bit age-toned but clean, unmarked and maps are free of any significant tears or damage. This rare set is modestly priced based on the above description.
