Worcestor, MA: Printed by Isaiah Thomas, 1806. First Edition. 407pp. Octavo [21 cm] Full brown calf with a gilt stamped red label and gilt bands on the backstrip. Very good. Sporadic foxing throughout. Work that contains themes and concept familiar to an LDS audience: Revelation; Sin and Salvation; Cosmology and other worlds. Joseph Lathrop (1731-1820), a highly respected and influential New England divine, served as pastor of the Congregational church in West Springfield, Massachusetts for more than sixty years. He was a third cousin to Lydia Fuller Gates, Joseph Smith's great-grandmother (Huntington; M. Anderson). His wife Elizabeth Dwight was second cousin (one generation removed) to Timothy Dwight. Lathrop was widely published, and he exhibited a kindly, tolerant spirit toward other Protestant denominations. He held doctorates of divinity from both Harvard and Yale, and was offered the Yale professorship in theology (1793), which he declined. Mormon Parallel 212.
