Joseph Lathrop (1731-1820), a highly respected and influential New England divine, served as pastor of the Congregational church in West Springfield, Massachusetts for more than sixty years. He was a third cousin to Lydia Fuller Gates, Joseph Smith's great-grandmother (Huntington; M. Anderson). His wife Elizabeth Dwight was second cousin (one generation removed) to Timothy Dwight. Lathrop was widely published, and he exhibited a kindly, tolerant spirit toward other Protestant denominations.
