He was committed to a mental insitution at 17 by his parents from which he escaped three times before a final release at 20. After only one year at law school, he left to roam as a hippie, becoming introduced to various drugs in the 1960's. After several years songwriting, Coelho would take again to writing, publishing the novel "Hell Archives" in 1982 to middling success. "The Alchemist" saw a little more success upon it's first release, but became an international bestseller after it was picked up by HarperCollins in 1993.
