1945 · New York
by FROST, Robert
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1945. First edition, later printing. 8vo. 192 pages. Original ochre cloth. In the pictorial dust jacket (defective, lacking spine panel). Provenance: Susan Pope (notes on endleaves at beginning and end, notes in text from readings and lectures made by Frost).
Loosely inserted are two original black-and-white photographs of Frost at Agnes Scott College. Signed on the front free endpaper: "Robert Frost / Agnes Scott 1946." Frost first visited Agnes Scott College in 1935 for a single lecture. He returned in 1940, and from 1945 until his death in 1963 he visited the college every winter. Each time he gave a single lecture and spent the remaining time with students and faculty, "in the president's home, in classrooms, in the library, or in the dining hall. He took late night walks around the campus and the neighborhood, and with his own key to the president's house made himself at home. His last visit to the college was in January 1962" (Agnes Scott College Special Collections). Susan Pope was a student and admirer of the poet and assembled a fine collection of books signed and/or inscribed by Frost during her years at the college. She continued to read Frost and attend his lectures, as attested by the notes in the text and endleaves in which she records the place and date (e.g. Harvard, 1958) certain poems were included in readings. A fine record of Frost's impact on students across decades (Pope saw him from the 1940s through the 60s).
This edition was selected by Louis Untermeyer and includes his biographical introduction and commentary. Crane A26. (Inventory #: 410674)
