New York: Macmillan, 1904. First Theatrical Edition. Octavo. 20cm. Publihser's deep red cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. Dustjacket. [xii]; 509pp. Photographic frontispiece. Some minor wear to extremities and bumping to spine ends, some areas of sunning, in a very fragile dustjacket with the front panel seperated neatly along the spine and some sections of loss and chipping to the edges and spine ends. A quite presentable copy of the book in a sadly very dried out dustjacket. Internally clean, with the same dryness and fragility affecting the early leaves of the prelims and causing cracking at the margins of several pages. A good copy, of a scarce edition, in a fragile and worn example of a dustjacket that is more normally completely absent.
The photographic frontispiece of Dustin Farnum in the title role of the dramatic production (for which this title was specifically reprinted) is signed by the actor. Farnum's popularity in making the role very much his own resulted in Cecil B. DeMille keeping his portrayal for the movie version in 1914. At one point Farnum's name would have been as familiar to American theatrical audiences as John Wayne or Robert DeNiro, and he was frequently billed as "America's Favorite Actor. (Inventory #: 82817)
