She began writing poetry at age six; it was a more "feminine" sort of writing of which her father approved. In 1863, she received a B.A. from Ripley Female College in Vermont, continuing her goal of becoming a writer. Ralph Waldo Emerson gave her advice to turn to fiction rather than poetry. The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer's Story (1878), Green's first full-length mystery, inspired a future generation of mystery writers including Agatha Christie. Green subsequently published poetry: Defense of the Bride and Other Poems (1882). Green's writing, particularly her mysteries, was reprinted continuously and garnered much success during her lifetime. Critics admired her mystery plot constructions. Though Green's work went out of style by the end of the 19th century, feminist reevaluations of fiction in the late 20th century have led to a renewal of interest in her work.
