first edition
1893
by Gregory, R.A. and Wells, H.G.
1893. London: Joseph Hughes & Co., 1893. 4 pp undated ads. Original ochre cloth decorated in brown.
First Edition of H.G. Wells's (co-written) second book, a treatise on physical geography -- with chapters such as "Concerning Members of the Solar System," "The Atmosphere and Climate," "The Earth's Crust," and "...The Distribution of Life in Time and Space." This book is scarcer than his first, which was his TEXT-BOOK OF BIOLOGY published earlier in 1893. (He also began a TEXT-BOOK OF GEOGRAPHY, but never finished it.) It was while he was a lecturer at University Correspondence College (1890-1892) that he wrote these; by the time this was published, he was (per the title page) "Lecturer in Geology at the University Tutorial College." In 1894 he would leave his wife for one of his students, Amy ("Jane") Robbins, who after his divorce would become his second wife. The years 1895-1898 would see Wells break out, with the publication of such books as THE TIME MACHINE, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, THE INVISIBLE MAN, and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. This is a very good-plus copy (spine a bit dulled as usual, cloth lightened on the spine and board edges). HONOURS PHYSIOGRAPHY is one of the scarcest of all Wells titles. Hammond E2; Wells Society 2; G.H. Wells 2. (Inventory #: 15634)
