Scarce polemic against the Great Awakening by the Puritan minister, prompted by a visit to Boston by James Davenport (1716–1757) an American Congregational clergyman and itinerant preacher. Chauncy (1705-1787) was the minister of the First Church in Boston for sixty years, and was one of the most influential ministers in New England.
