by Nin, Anais
[Claremont, CA]: n.p., 1976. Near fine.. Small collection of four gracious and affectionate letters from Nin to Margaret Mulhauser, former Assistant Librarian at the Claremont Colleges' Honnold Library and a friend from Nin's years in California. Margaret Mulhauser, acknowledged in a number of academic monographs for proofreading, editing, and indexing assistance, was at one time curator of the Bodman Collection of Italian Renaissance Manuscripts at Claremont; her husband, Frederick Mulhauser, was an English professor at Pomona College from 1941 to 1974. Reginald Pole, Nin's father-in-law, once ran the Pomona Dramatics Department, and Nin's other connections with the Claremont Colleges grew out of her long residence in Los Angeles with second husband Rupert Pole. In this collection's last letter, written not long before her death, Nin writes: "Did you know Claremont offered me a Doctorate but on the same day as I had already accepted one by Dartmouth!" Her other letters discuss the publications of her own Gemor Press — "Yes, the Press is going well, the young are 'discovering' me — I've had to reprint UNDER A GLASS BELL, HOUSE OF INCEST and SOLAR BANQUE — Without reviews or any help but my friends" — and anticipate the "renewal of an old constellation": herself, Henry Miller, and Lawrence Durrell all appearing in the same 1959 issue of TWO CITIES. A small treasury. 3.5'' x 5.5'' [postcards]; 11'' x 8.5'' [letter]. Four holograph letters, including: two postcards with original postage, postmarked 1954 and 1955; one 1-page letter in original mailing envelope, postmarked 1976; and one pale orange notecard lacking date or postmark. All items addressed to Margaret Mulhauser and signed by Nin. Minor wear and toning. (Inventory #: 52875)
