by William Elgin Laycock
Marquette, MI: N.p., 1961. Archive of two original manuscript journals, a 1957 commercial "Daily Reminder" and a 1959 commercial "Date Book," kept by Michigan district game manager for the Marquette District of the Michigan Department of Conservation, William Elgin Laycock, with manuscript dates beginning on January 8, 1957 and ending on October 31, 1961.
Both of the journals in the archive have marker annotations on the front boards, with the 1957 "Daily Reminder" reading "W.E. Laycock / Game Division / Dept. of Conservation / Marquette, Mich / From Jan. 1957 to June 30, 1959," and the 1959 "Date Book" reading "W.E. Laycock / Game Div. / Dept. of Conservation / Marquette Michigan / from - July 2, 1959 / To - Nov 31, 1961." Entries range from a few entries a week to near daily, noting game, land, and weather conditions, work time, travel, and expenses, and communications with colleagues, hunters, farmers, and community members throughout northern Michigan, as well as documenting regional and state meetings with various associated conservation and hunting groups. A thorough and prime manuscript record of state conservation efforts in the northern midwest during the mid twentieth century. Entrees clean and legible.
Laycock graduated from Michigan State University in 1938 and began working for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in 1944, as district game manager and Regional Director, until his retirement in 1975. During his 31 years at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Layton published extensively in regional journals, frequently appearing in contemporary news reports on wildlife and conservation issues in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
6 x 8.75 inches each. Very Good plus, with some edgewear and rubbing at the corners, commensurate with use, and starting at the front hinge of the 1957 "Daily Reminder. (Inventory #: 163009)
