1967 · Hong Kong
by Goodrich, L. Carrington (intro)
Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press, 1967. 10½" x 7", pp. [42]; brown printed wrappers; stab-stitched Chinese style; one corner bumped, very slight evidence of old label residue on upper wrapper; near fine. Hsin-pien tui-hsiang szu-yen is likely the first illustrated vocabulary in existence, with the first edition published in 1436 and predating the West's oldest picture vocabulary (Orbis Sensualium Pictus) by two hundred years. The Columbia copy, which is reproduced here in facsimile, is a possible Ming reprint. (Inventory #: 68391)
