Lovely 1886 pocket map of Philadelphia and vicinity issued by J. L. Smith. Covers from Abington south as far as Gloucester and from Marple east as far as Delanco in New Jersey. The maps is incredibly detailed with streets, parks, and some important buildings in the city are noted. The city is divided into numbered wards. Fairmont Park and the site for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition is identified. In the surrounding areas, major roads, railway lines, rivers, and railroad stations are identified along with other topographical features. The map is in good condition. Mounted on original linen, shows minor toning along the original fold lines. Folds into original binder.
John L. Smith (1846-1921) was a printer, publisher and map seller active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He served in the Civil War and eventually settled in Philadelphia in 1865. He worked with Rufus . L. Barnes and acquired his business in 1868. This is a fine example of his work. (Inventory #: 322256)
