Publisher's black top stain. Black endpapers. With a little rubbing to the gilt design on the backstrip, and some minor abrasions to the lower half of the backstrip and the surrounding area of the front board. Internally fine. All plates present. A bright copy. In the publisher's two-part illustrated box (defective). The top of the publisher's box is defective, lacking all four of the side pieces, and the illustration on the box top is rubbed. Poe's classic tales of the fantastic and the macabre with 8 beautiful tipped-in color plates and 24 full page black-and-white illustrations by Harry Clarke. Additionally, there are numerous black-and-white vignettes throughout the text. Harry Clarke was a prominent figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His distinctive style is a perfect match for the gothic horror of Edgar Allan Poe's most beloved works. The first version, which was published in 1919 only had monotone illustrations.
