by (POMOLOGY). HAYNES, THOMAS
London: B. and R. Crosby and Co, 1814. Second Edition. 235 x 140 mm. (9 1/4 x 5 1/2"). vii, [1], 101, [3] (ads) pp.
Pale blue publisher's boards, paper labels on cover and spine. Front pastedown with bookplate of F. J. Chittenden. â—†Boards somewhat worn and soiled, joints beginning to split, the paper label on the spine partly gone; internally with scattered areas of minor foxing, but a nevertheless appealing copy in its original binding, with quite clean and fresh leaves.
Preserved in its insubstantial and unrestored original binding, this is a distinguished association copy of a highly specialized manual for fruit growing, initially published in 1812. In this, his second gardening book, Thomas Haynes (fl. 1811-14) presents a new method for cultivating strawberries, raspberries, and gooseberries, including detailed instructions from planting through harvesting stages. Our copy of the second edition has obviously been put to use in a gardening setting, and every sign of its practical employment takes us back in a very evocative way to early 19th century berry patches. Our previous owner, Frederick James Chittenden, OBE, FLS, VMH (1873-1950) was an eminent English horticulturalist and first director of the Royal Horticultural Society Wisley Garden. He wrote and contributed to a number of important works on horticulture and edited the "Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society.". (Inventory #: ST19567-129)
