London: printed for Thomas M'Lean, Haymarket, n.d., 1820. Approx. 9½" x 7", pp. [104] plus 50 hand-colored engravings, each accompanied by a leaf of descriptive text; plates with a J. Murray 1814 imprint, but several of the plates bear an 1825 watermark indicating a second edition; contemporary red morocco-backed, red cloth-covered boards, smooth gilt-decorated spine, t.e.g. by Zaehnsdorf; lightly rubbed but overall very good, sound and clean. This volume retains the publisher’s original label with the title “Costume of China Fifty Coloured Engravings Three Guineas” on a rear flyleaf. The plates depict images of various professions including entertainers, imperial costumes, tradesmen, musicians, street scenes, soldiers, and even a bookseller!
